Although Kharkiv is one of Ukraine’s cities most at risk from Russian attacks, its people have adapted to life in wartime. Among them is Alona Prylutska, who refuses to let constant rocket, artillery, and drone strikes stop her from pursuing her life’s mission: rescuing bats in distress. As co-founder of Ukraine’s largest bat rehabilitation center, Alona describes to Rihards Plūmes how her team continues to save thousands of bats each year, educate the public —even as war turns buildings into deadly traps for both people and animals. A look at wartime life through the eyes of a passionate activist and the vulnerable creatures she protects.
