In the village of Velyka Omeľiana in western Ukraine, the first women’s volunteer fire brigade in the country was created during the war – it is made up of teachers, medics, cultural workers and representatives of other professions who had never planned to do this kind of work, but now fill the gap left after the village’s men went to the front. Brigade member Tetiana Omelianchuk, in a conversation with Dīvs Reiznieks, talks about callouts to fires, providing first medical and psychological aid, the initial skepticism that turned into respect, and the team’s motto: “If not us, then who?”
